Letter from a landowner

We recently received an e-mail from a land owner concerned about possible crop damage. It's a very nice letter and emphasizes why we try so hard to remind snowmobilers to follow marked trails and RESPECT the landowner's property.

Hi, Kelly & the Snosurfers -

Thank you for your kind invitation to the annual Chicken BBQ. I regret that I will be unable to attend, but wondered if you could pass this sentiment along to the sno-mobilers.

If it weren't for the farms there would be little adventure area for sno-mobiling. We are pretty much losing our farms, and I suspect that most of your club members have never even lived or worked on a farm.  But please urge them to stay on the marked trails or some of us will have to deny them any access at all.

As you know, I rent my fields to (name withheld) who has a 5 year growth of alfalfa on my 90 acres.  Please tell your club members that when they ride over the crowns of the frozen plants, they kill them and reduce the next summer's harvest.

I think that if you give your members this reason for WHY you have marked trails they might begin to understand why so many refuse to add their land to your trails.

Most sincerely,
(Signed- A concerned land owner)

As always, please stay on the marked trails and ALWAYS respect the landowner's property.  Avoid bare spots and any sort of crop damage-- most of our trails are on private property with permission granted by the kindness of our many land owners. Abuse it and we lose it.....

To whom it may concern,

I am a farmer's daughter and I also am a snowmobiler, I do not blame the farmers for closing the trails. Today the sun is out and the trails are mud. I have seen several sleds go by today ripping up the fields. If there is not enough snow stay home. I think this message should go out to the snowmobilers that live in the city or not aware of what damage the sleds do to the fileds when there is not enough snow. I know what snowmobilers have spent on thier sleds but the damage they make to the crops is far more, with the loss of crops, loss of feed for the cattle and the money the farmers have to put back into the crops that have been ripped up. Just think of the gas farmers have to use to replant the crops. How much do you pay for gas? TOO MUCH< BUT THAT IS THE COST. Just a note.
