Trail Hazards
OBSERVED TRAIL HAZARDS
For this upcoming season, the inspection program has identified the following trail hazards that could be observed on a funded trail and noted on an inspection report:
1.Bridges
and Culverts:
Bridges and culverts will be inspected for Object Marker signs at each corner of the bridge or culvert and the presence of Bridge Ahead signs on each approach to the bridge or culvert.
2. Road
Crossings:
All road crossings must have a Stop Ahead sign on each trail approaching the road crossing and a Stop sign on each side of the road at the crossing.
3. Fields
Open field trails that have a drainage ditch or other gully must be signed with a Slow sign on each approach to the ditch or gully and a blazer on each side of the ditch or gully location.
Open field trails that end in a 90-degree turn must be signed approaching the turn as well as in the turn.
Open field trails that have a blind hill crest must be signed with either:
- a single post at the crest with a Keep Right sign on each side, or
- 2 posts defining the edges of the trail at the crest.
4. Changes
in trail width
Fence-line openings in a field must be signed with a Blazer on each approach and on each side of the opening. Openings in a wooded area coming from a field must have a Blazer on each side of the opening entering the woods.
5. Man-made
Objects
Man made objects that are located within a distance that is the width of the trail from the trail must be marked with stakes, flagging, or signage that is reflectorized.
